“Back to the Start” for US food chain, Chipotle, was the surprise hit at the Grammy awards on Sunday night, getting major plaudits as the show stealer of the night.

Directed by Royal College of Art graduate Johnny Kelly at Nexus, the spot made its tv premiere at the awards and features a cover by Willie Nelson of the Coldplay song “The Scientist”. Already enjoying acclaim since its online launch last year, “Back to the Start” has been named in the top 10 ads by Adweek and its rapturous reception at the Grammys looks set to see it continue on its upward path.

Twitter lit up in response to the first TV showing of the work with many viewers admitting to be being deeply moved by the spot. In coverage usually only seen for Superbowl commercials the phenomenon was picked up by the likes of The New York Times and The Washington Post where it was described as ‘performance of the night’ even though not part of the actual show.

The ad has been tweeted more than ten thousand times since the awards and the Youtube views now stand at over five million. The song itself has worked its way up the iTunes charts (#24 on the main charts, #1 on the US country music chart)

Art in Unusual Spaces

A digital cat which breaks down into its constituent pixels, a group of happy children pointing and laughing at you while you wait for the number 55 and a wide-eyed face comprised of little cardboard rooms; you might have recently noticed some surprising artwork popping up on digital screens across London.

Nexus has collaborated with outdoor media specialist Clear Channel to provide art in unusual places, namely a brand new network of 100 digital screens in bus stops, from Shoreditch High St to Cambridge Circus, Hammersmith to Oxford Street.

Nexus artists featured so far include Johnny Kelly with ‘Head’, Fx Goby with 6 specially created illustrations varying from children and cats to jellyfish and a waterfall, Ceyln’s delicate illustrations of tumbling women and a crowd of shoppers and 3 segments lifted from Quayola’s ‘Strata 4’ film installation, a graphic reinterpretation of the Ruebens altarpiece painting ’ La Descente du Croix’, which was originally commisioned for Le Palais Des Beaux Arts in Lille.

The ambition of this project is to make surprising and high quality contemporary art available to the general public in those wasted moments spent waiting for the bus home. Longer term, the plan is to offer full moving image and interactive work on the screens, once council permissions allow.

In the meantime, enjoy a refreshing change from billboard advertising - these ‘digital 6-sheets’ are like secret treasures, waiting to be discovered.

We’ve been patiently sitting on this gem for a while now, but it’s well worth the wait…

Woof Wan-Bau has created a darkly compelling promo for hotly tipped new force in music Barbara Panther.

Using a mix of animation, live action and inspired model-making, the video is a complex visual rendering for Barbara Panther’s first official single, ‘Empire’. The promo perfectly mirrors the track’s bold, jumpy sound and the theatricality of Barbara herself.

Rising to the challenge, Roel worked with construction designer Paul Beuk to design and build a giant tape spool in which leader singer, Tjeerd Borhof is wound up in, playing the part of the nipple. Making a guest appearance in the video is notorious Dutch rocker, Elle Bandita, who observes as Tjeerd revolves around the spool being wound up in real tape. Content to suffer for his art, Tjeerd endured 13 takes in which Roel used a slow zoom in on his head.
Jonas Odell has created a clever new promo for The Rolling Stones soon-to-be-released archive track ‘Plundered My Soul’. The track is taken from their classic album ‘Exile on Main St.’, which is to be reissued next month, supplemented by ten previously unheard songs.

The music video’s animated collage style takes the iconic cover artwork from the original ‘Exile on Main St.’ as its inspiration. The cut-up montage style presents archive stills and moving footage of the band that take us on a nostalgic but epic journey through a very special era in The Rolling Stones’ history.

Jonas also shot some new footage inspired by some of the stills from the original album, giving a sense that even the burlesque performers of the original art work have come alive.

The film follows an annual dolphin hunt in the Japanese town of Taiji.

A film critic writing for Trespass Magazine commented on the titles, “the opening of the film is more like a modern spy thriller than the animal planet type documentaries we are used to seeing. Filming with a heat-seeking, military-issued camera, the opening sequence establishes a sinister tone that permeates the whole documentary. This isn’t going to be a ‘look at the dolphins aren’t they pretty, aren’t they clever’ sort of film - be prepared for something completely different.”

Johnny Kelly, has created a new title sequence for the popular, long-running Dutch children’s programme, Het Klokhuis.

Dutch agency KesselsKramer approached Johnny with the brief as part of a rebrand for the programme, with the show’s new logo to be lifted from the animation for the title sequence. An apple is the basis for the new identity, as the programme’s title literally translates as ‘The Apple Core’.

The stop-frame animation sees a series of apples, all with a different experiment happening at their core to wet the appetite for what’s to come.
Roel Wouters has devised a unique concept for Hot Chip’s latest single, “One Life Stand”. Roel created an ‘experimental’ environment in which the band were left alone to explore and develop their own music video.

With the rest crew closed off from the set, the band became director, cameraman and even choreographer to create a promo that is nothing but ‘Hot Chip’.

The band had a minimal set-up to play with of just one fixed camera, one handycam and their instruments. A silver sphere was also suspended in the middle of the room (inspired by Roel’s daily gaze into his silversphere teapot!) giving the band further creative scope to experiment with different perspectives. The constant revolutions of the band, the sphere and the cameras moving around each other all work to create a surreal and almost trippy experience for the viewer.

Nexus director Roel Wouters has created a new concept interactive music video utilising crowd sourcing and he’s inviting YOU to play a starring role..!

Developed for a track by Dutch band, Cmon & Kypski, the band perform a series of slightly bizarre dance moves straight to camera. These shots form the “framework” for the video. All you have to do is use your webcam which will automatically send in the still of yourself mimicking one of the bands’ poses.

Ultimately, 50% of the video will be made up of images sent in from fans which will be updated daily to include new images. The entire framework will be available to view, as well as images that are queued up, and you can even send out links of your frame of fame to your friends and Facebook profile!

Nexus made the grade in the Board’s annual round-up of the year’s top production companies.

“The London-based animation company’s directors clearly benefited from Adland’s sudden penchant for colorful, upbeat creative in these difficult recessionary times. Highlights from ’09 included Smith & Foulkes’ Where’s Waldo-like Comcast campaign Sing-a-Long for Goodby, Johnny Kelly’s IOC ad “Olympic Spirit”, A Town Called Panic creators Pic Pic Andre’s manic Cravendale work for W&K and Woof-Wan Bau’s utterly insane “The Cry” for VW. The company signed interactive design duo Champagne Valentine, who produced a spellbinding web experience to accompany Miroslaw Balka’s installation at the Tate Modern. Nexus also hired former 180, Amsterdam head of production Cedric Gairard as EP.”

The two 30 second films, each rendered in beautiful high def 3D animation, show a new beginning for hundreds of Sims characters as they discover their new home – a pristine seaside town set in an idyllic valley – and what they can do there.

Almost all the characters and sets were designed by the Nexus team using the new in-game software but animated with Smith & Foulkes’ trademark wit and comedy, from fantasy wives to death-defying grannies. Woof Wan-Bau gets our heads spinning with his stunning use of stop frame animation and live action. Created in camera and using a dizzying series of rotational transitions, Woof Wan-Bau switches between camera angles to swing from the child’s perspective to the parent’s and back again, communicating the chaos of family life.

Woof Wan-Bau comments: “Shooting a combination of stop-frame and live action with a gang of very young children in two days was a tall order, but we somehow managed it and it turned out to be a lot of fun. Maybe it was the fact that we had to endure a lot of screaming that we all worked so fast!”

Comcast takes the high tech and renders it brilliantly everyday – a celebration of all things digital amongst a whole community that lives to the rhythm of the music.

Built with an isometric-style perspective often seen in illustration and gaming, the set is unique and is a 3D-built construction with a 2D render. All the individually constructed elements were designed then carefully pieced together by a team of skilled animators and compositors.

Nexus have also created animated interactive banners for the campaign with Goodby, launching on various sites across America this week.

More Cravendale ads from Pic Pic Andre

Nexus and Belgian stop-frame directors Pic Pic Andre have produced three more unique commercials for Cravendale milk, once again featuring Pirate, Cyclist and Cow and introducing a rather irate bull as well as a few generations of milk-obsessed farmers. Following on from 2007’s original films, the three spots centre on a milk bar that, you’ve guessed it, only serves Cravendale milk.

Pic Pic Andre’s technique of animating mass-produced toy figures is raw and charming, producing films of distinctive humour that always seem to be on the verge of anarchy, whilst remaining inspirational and infectious. You never know what’s going to happen next – but once you’re inside their world you see that it always works out perfectly. Wonderfully bonkers.

An animated collage of Manga-to-Marvel inspired styles, Tom & Mark’s ‘Secret Ingredient Swelter Stopper’ spot for Coke shows there’s a lot of work that goes into making stuff not perfect.

According to Tom & Mark, trying to create a look that could have been made by cutting up a stack of old comic books isn’t as simple as it seems. With a tight schedule and a ton of artwork to create, the brothers immersed themselves in the design stage of the project, creating endless creature possibilities before settling on our two hero characters. Tom and Mark worked with comic book artists to create character designs with a truly authentic look, then each part was animated individually with each scene assembled in layers to show the depth and shadows of the elements. The animation varies from smooth and stylish to slightly clunky and raw to give the spot the effect of having been created from individual comic book frames.

This new Wieden & Kennedy Portland commercial for The Super Bowl 2009 plays with the well established idea of the unifying power of Coke but gives it a modern twist.

Satirising our age of ubiquitous devices, with us so immersed in our digital lives we sometimes miss the chance to connect with people in the real world, the film vividly portrays just that. Coke becomes the catalyst for a shared moment, transforming people back from their digital selves. It’s not about crazy 3D characters running amok, more about the everyday human behaviour of idly sitting around in parks and coffee shops.

The directors used a mix of live action and animation to achieve the split-second transitions from human to racing car driver, zombie or spaceman – even a mythical centaur! Shot in Buenos Aires, all 3D character design, modelling and animation was done in the Nexus studio in London.

We’re thrilled and proud that Smith & Foulkes’ internationally-acclaimed animated short, ‘This Way Up’, has been nominated for an Oscar® for best animated short at the 81st annual Academy Awards.

Paved with awards, the film’s road to the Oscars® has been far less bumpy than the one travelled by the hapless pair it features. Praise for the film has spanned the globe, with wins at festivals from the Palm Springs International Film Festival of Shorts to the London Film Festival via Siggraph Asia, and all stops along the way. This makes us all very happy.

Boney Clem for Friendly Fires

Clemens Habicht got back to the bare bones of directing in his promo for Skeleton Boy, the latest single from super-cool post-punk electro rockers, Friendly Fires.

In this edgy, monochromatic music video the band were transformed into Skeleton Boys. By using a small confined black space, purpose built for them to play in and wearing special black suits so that only their faces were visible, an in-camera effect simulating stripped back motion capture was achieved with hundreds of polystyrene balls.

The effect was really satisfying to watch – as the track built, the balls took on different patterns to create the skeleton outline and then the pixel cloud progressively fills into a whole suit. The combination of this and the performance of the track takes a simple idea and gives it a playful edge.

Clemens’ comments: “Taking out all the excess information and concentrating on their movement through this pseudo motion control, meant we could focus on the performance dynamic of the band, especially lead singer Ed’s great dance moves.”

‘Lies’, Jonas Odell’s long-awaited follow up short to ‘Never Like The First Time’, has won the Best International Short Film category at the Sundance Film Festival.

In it, Jonas introduces us to a burglar who, when found out, claims to be a moonlighting accountant, the small boy who confesses to a theft he didn’t commit and the woman whose whole life has been one long series of lies. Truth turns out to be more intriguing than fiction, even when the subject is lies…

Smith & Foulkes have just completed ‘Tales of the Road’ for the Department for Transport’s THINK! Child Road Safety campaign.

The modern fairytale-style ads are a set of cautionary tales warning children of the dangers of the road. Based around the idea that their injured selves are looking back to before the moment of impact the focal points of the campaign are the three children’s stories. The commercials have a unique painted backdrop, which contrasts beautifully with the 3D characters to create a striking, memorable campaign.

Tom & Mark created ‘Muffin Man’, a fully animated 60 second TV spot for the re-brand of Royal Bank of Canada for BBDO Canada.

Based on the idea of a small business expansion, Tom & Mark designed and built a giant department store theme park based entirely on muffins! Using a stop frame aesthetic the team created nearly a hundred characters, a model railway, muffin boats and robot waiters as each stage of the expansion seamlessly builds making the finished ad very re-watchable!
